Q-Bert’s Wave Twisters (Video Versions)

DJ Q-Bert is probably one of the most important turntablists alive, and certainly an influence on me as well as countless other cats. His only solo album to date, “Wave Twisters,” is an unskippable masterpiece of scratch mastery and fun.

Years later, the DVD alluded to in the liner notes was released, and it added a visual feast to the already goofy, funky, fun music complete with an army of chin heads, a fighting dentist and a breaking grandpa.

But which came first, the chicken or the egg?

In this case, there’s not much info but I suspect the version of the album that was recorded for the DVD came first and the album version was recorded later. The two versions vary in many ways, most significantly “Attack of the Octobots” which is a kick-ass track with bending bass thumps and frantic cuts as the Playmobile-esque city in the video is ravaged by floating octopus spaceships blasting the landscape with flames and explosions, piloted by ISP crew members.

It’s a great part of the video and probably one of the best moments of the entire album, and it’s not even on the album.

So I took the time to rip all the tracks. Some changes are really subtle with a hook or bit changed here and there and a few things are missing, but if you’re as much of a fan of this classic entry into the hallowed halls of hip hop as I am, you will definitely enjoy revisiting it again from a new vein.

A.D.’s “Art of the State”

Regular visitors to the site already know about me and my background with a Christian up-bringing. That lead to heavy exposure to my parental-approved diet of Christian music growing up. I still, even now as I struggle with my own feelings about Christianity and God, I still have very fond memories and a certain appreciation for much of that music.

A.D., a group that sprung out of Kansas (the band, that is), entranced me with their unique first album. Words can’t describe how much I blasted this back in the day, and how, after ripping it to mp3, I still throw these tunes into regular circulation in my daily music diet. I must listen to at least one of these songs at least once a week.

This album is really hard to get (although right now, it’s finally available on Amazon for the first time I’ve EVER seen).

If you want some ’80s rock that takes some really daring chances and can look past the spiritual elements and cheese (in that “Queen” kind of way), then you might want to give this a listen. At bare minimum, for you hip hop heads out there, look at Christian music as an entire untapped sample base. I’ve pulled bits and pieces out of these songs myself and other Christian groups as well to give me those coveted DJ gems that nobody else is rocking.

Despite all the lawsuits, Autotune pop ditties and forums full of beat-miners, there are still breakbeats out there for enterprising producers to snatch and build with.

This song blew my fucking mind when I first saw the video back in the day. Just insane. Miz won the DMC the year he entered with his frantic scratch skills.

Spyder-D – Buckwheat’s Beat

When rap started, people didn’t release albums. They released singles. I don’t know much about Spyder-D other than the Christmas song I have by him on a different collection and this strange tune about Buckwheat of The Little Rascals, who is apparently down with Spyder via an obvious impression. Enjoy this one for the bizarre beat with… hell… I don’t know what they used but it’s nice.

Top Quality – Magnum Opus

This cat’s biggest claim aside from being down with the Juice Crew was being Biz Markie’s brother. Which is probably why he disappeared as quickly as he appeared. I see the album float around online every so often but I’ve never grabbed it.

Rodney O Joe Cooley – DJ’s and MC’s

If you don’t know who these west-coast legends of the old school bass and hip hop movement are, then I want to slap you. Educate yourself with the real, non-album extended version complete with a dope back-and-forth sample-drop fill-in lyrical delivery that was often imitated after they crafted it.

Deltron 3030 Instrumentals

Deltron 3030 is the collective brainchild of beatsmith, Dan the Automator, Del the Funkee Homosapian and Kid Koala.

Their (probably) only record was an amazing foree into Del’s mind with fuzzed out space beats and Koala’s loping scratches that mesmerized me for quite a while when it was released. Some of these songs still rock me today, and it’s been some ten years.

Angry Samoans?

Nobody ever said this was a strictly hip hop website (although that’s the pretty dominant theme, I guess).

Angry Samoans are what I would describe as “an obscure band,” although they’re one of those bands that are famous enough to where you probably know somebody who has heard of them.

It’s pretty much pure, uncut punk, complete with loud, short songs and a frenzied, “give a fuck”-less attitude. Do not play these songs at work. Here’s the far more helpful Wikipedia article.
