What you have here is a snapshot of hip hop from 1985 through 1995. This live mix show hosted mainly by DJ Smoke and DJ Motor City was a real inspiration for me. I've tried to clean up and patch back together as much of the mixes as I can from the 100+ tapes I have.

Not only did this mix show feature live scratching, mixing, remixing and other elements that have all but vanished from mainstream hip hop radio these days, but they also played a staggering array of different styles that I think is unknown to the rest of the country. At the time, New York stations would only play North-East Coast artists and West-Coast stations might play a few North-East artists but mostly local acts and NEITHER of them played down-South bass and electrofunk that later became the backbone of the modern crunk movement that now is so popular.

As a result, I was exposed to a far larger variety of hip hop and am probably a lot more nuanced and open-minded than most of my contemperaries.

Shorter mixes are by DJ Night Train (he was the last live-mix DJ they had before they went to the pre-programmed, boring format that so many of the stations use now).

Remember, many songs featured here were never released on anything other than vinyl.
